Juliana Paes Carnivall Queen Paes Juliana

 Juliana Paes - Carnival Queen

Juliana Paes is the next legendary Brazilian Carnaval Diva we will talk about.  I have to admit this is a very difficult task, since she has been considered by the specialized press, the successor of legendary Carnaval Queens such as Luiza Brunet from Imperatriz Leopoldinense samba-school, and Luma De Oliveira, from Portela samba-school .  The actress has a true passion for samba and carnival, which maybe one of the reasons why her passage as the Queen of Drums for Viradouro Samba School, which is based in São Gonçalo, (a city adjacent to Niteroi which is across Rio´s Guanabara Bay) was so successful.

Goddess of Carnival Juliana Paes is a perfect example of well established Samba partnership.   Being native to the Niteroi region, Juliana chose the Viradouro Samba School to start her samba parading story in Rio de Janeiro.   She started to join the rehearsals still very young, and loved the rhythm of the drums: “I was born in this town, and this is the samba-school of my heart.  I always used to participate at the samba rehearsals and join the parade at Viradouro much before I was famous.”

After Juliana´s success in a local soap-opera, the Muse was finally invited to occupy the coveted post of Queen of Drum Section for Viradouro Samba School, for which she maintained for 5 consecutive years; an impressive mark.

The Muse enjoyed great success at these carnaval parades, being applauded both by the samba community, and Brazilian media.   (Juliana Paes was officially announced as the Drums Queen for the first time at Viradouro Samba School in 2004).

A great portion of her success as Queen of Drums Section is credited to her active involvement with the school.   The Brazilian brunette always took part of most of the technical rehearsals at the samba school headquarters and at the Sambadrome and considers this involvement vey important: “Behind all the Carnaval glamour and beauty, there is a lot of work.  We have to take part of the rehearsals, be in perfect harmony with the drum section”, she stated during an interview.

Also important to note that in 2004, her first year as Viradouro Drum Queen, Juliana Paes replaced legendary samba muse and sensual icon, Luma de Oliveira.   That was not a simple task due to Luma´s immense popularity at the time.  And she effectively presented a marvelous parade.

Congratulations Goddess of Carnival Juliana Paes for your brilliant Carnaval history!  And thank you for representing the samba culture in such a wonderful and passionate way.
