Estação Primeira Mangueira Profile - Samba Mangueira

GRES Estação Primeira de 2012 Mangueira Samba School

I confess that to write about mythical Estação Primeira Mangueira Samba-School is quite a challenging:  It´s hard even to know where to start from!  Mangueira is by far the most popular samba-school in Brazil, and according to a few researches, it has an instant memory recall by the Brazilian population of 85%, when asked to name a samba-school.  Mangueira, who´s history is attached to legendary composer and founder Cartola, also proved to be not only poetic but efficient, winning 18 Carnival Championships since 1932, presenting memorable carnival parades like in 1984, with the theme-plot “Yes, Nós Temos Braguinha” and anthological “Carnaval de todos os tempos”.   Estação Primeira de Mangueira, whose colors is green and pink (inspired by soccer team Fluminense from Rio), also has the largest samba rehearsal in Brazil, with about 8,000 people every Saturday, and 40,000 beer cans consumed!

The emblematic samba-school is also responsible for several innovations at the parades, and including new type of samba instrument.  But that´s not all, Mangueira also develops a social support program where a day-care unit is run, as well as an Olympic sports program hosting more than 3.000 athletes.  (This program was visited by President Bill Clinton in 1997.)   For some of these reasons, and some others that go beyond the comprehension of many Brazilians, Mangueira is today considered much more that a samba-school, but a true Brazilian institution.  Let´s understand how all of this started!

Origins of Mangueira Samba-School

Estação Primeira da Mangueira Samba School was born in 28th of April 1928 from a fusion of the Rio Carnival street bands called “Dos Arengueiros”, “Tia Tomazia”, “Tia Fé”, “Senhor Júlio”, “Mestre Candinho” and “Rancho Príncipe das Florestas”.   The reunion that gave birth to Mangueira took place at Joana Velho’s house.   She was Euclides’ wife, a prominent samba lover.   In this meeting legendary musicians, samba lovers, and song writers like Angenor de Oliveira, known as Cartola, Saint Clair (Aurora’s husband- she was Euclides daughter),  Euclides samba lover,  Saturnino Gonçalves (known as Satur – Mrs. Neuma’s father), Marcelino José Claudino (the old Mansur or Mançu) José Espinguela - percussionist, Abelardo Clemente and Ismar were present.  Cartola suggested that the new Samba-School would have Green and Pink as its colors, as he was a Fluminense Football Club fan (other say the he was inspired by a Carnival Ranch that existed at Laranjeiras – Rio neighborhood.)  The name given to the school according to Juvenal Lopes was given due to a samba music composed by Cartola named “Chega de Demanda”.

The expression Estação Primeira that comes before the name Mangueira was adopted by the school because Mangueira (mango tree) flowers on the first season (Estação Primeira).  However, some researchers used to say that the name Mangueira wasn’t due to the tree but because of a hat factory that existed in the neighborhood or even due to the number of mango trees in the neighborhood another possibility is that the name was due to the fact that Mangueira was the first station after Central Station.  ( Mangueira was the first samba school to adopt a color and introduced to the parade a samba instrument called “Pandeiro Oitavado”. )  Among other innovations, Mangueira was also the first samba-school to create the composer’s wing in Rio samba-school.

Recent History

In 2007, Mangueira samba-school tackled many taboos and after 79 years, Mangueira would celebrate their 80th anniversary by opening the drum section to women.  The idea came from the drum section master Ivo Meirelles and was very controversial.  Besides, in the same year, for the first time in the samba-school’s history, they decided that the schools´ drum queen wouldn´t be chosen by someone from the community, but someone from outside.

In 2008, Mangueira went through what many considered their worst crises. First, their theme talked about the century of Frevo rhythm instead of making a tribute to their founder and most important personality: Cartola, a founding member of the school that not only had importance to the samba world, but to all of Brazilian music.  Another fact that occurred at the time was the choice of the controversial drum queen choice which contributed for Mangueira negative parade, and the bitter 10th place.

2008 wasn’t definitively a good year for Mangueira community.  In 14th June of that year, school lost one of their biggest icons: Jamelão.   He was a victim of multiple organ failure and his lost left a void not only in Mangueira community but in all of Brazilian samba.  Jamelão was one of the strongest figures of carnaval with his bad mood and strong voice he became a true authority of carioca samba.  He was Mangueira’s voice from 1949 until 2006, when he had an ischemic AVC and wasn’t able to record the official samba school CD and in 2007 he wasn’t able to parade form his school.

After 2009’s parade, an election took place were percussionist Ivo Meirelles was elected and decide to review the structure of the later years.  New names were hired and the Carnaval Producer changed once again becoming Marcia Lage.  The Mestre-sala ( samba host ) and Porta Bandeira couple changed and is now Raphael and Marcella Alves.  Renata Santos, one of Carnival’s muses is now drum queen and last the creation of the three tenors composed by Luizito, Zé Paulo and Rixxa to sing the samba in the parade.

For 2010 parade the school chose the theme “Mangueira é a Musica do Brasil” by Marcia Lage. She was however substituted by Jaime Cezário and Jorge Caribé.    During Mangueira’s history, the school achieved 18 titles amongst which one super-championship, exclusive, offered in 1984, at the Sambadrome’s inauguration.   The “green and pink samba-school” was champion of Carnaval Monday, Portela was champion of Sunday.  Three schools went to the Champion Saturday parade, where they competed for the super championship and Mangueira was the great champion.

Mangueira´s Personalities:

Mangueira Samba-School has also been famed Brazil wide, and why not to say worldwide, as the “celebrities’ samba-school”:  Many local and international artists, sportsmen, politicians, writers and specially samba musicians support Mangueira and hell somehow to propagate its aura abroad.  Some of these VIP Mangueira fans include Brazilian composers & singers Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento, and late Tom Jobim.  In sports, we see soccer player Junior from Brazil, Diego Maradona from Argentina, and Adriano. International celebrities include former President Bill Clinton and Vincent Cassel.

Mangueira 2011 Lyrics:

QUIS O CRIADOR ME ABENÇOAR...
FAZER DE MIM UM MENESTREL
TRAÇO O MEU PASSO NO COMPASSO
DO SURDO DE PRIMEIRA...
SOU MANGUEIRA!
TRILHEI RUAS E VIELAS
MORRO DE ALEGRIA, EMOÇÃO!
PROCURANDO HARMONIA, ENCONTREI A POESIA...
E ME ENTREGUEI À BOÊMIA
NO BURACO QUENTE, OLARIA E CHALÉ
COM MEUS PARCEIROS DE FÉ

TRAGO VIOLÃO
NO ZICARTOLA, OPINIÃO...
SE TE ENCANTEI COM MEU TALENTO
ACABO TE VENDENDO UMA CANÇÃO

PASSEI... AQUELA DOR VENCEU ESPINHOS
"AMOR PERFEITO" EM NOSSO NINHO
QUE FOI DESFEITO AO LUAR
PRAZER... ME CHAMAM NELSON CAVAQUINHO
TATUEI EM MEU CAMINHO
SELETAS OBRAS MUSICAS
SONHEI QUE "FOLHAS SECAS" COBRIAM MEU CHÃO
PRA DELÍRIO DESSA MULTIDÃO,
IMPOSSÍVEL NÃO EMOCIONAR
CHOREI... AO VOLTAR PARA MINHA RAIZ
AO TEU LADO EU SOU MAS FELIZ
PRA SEMPRE VOU TE AMAR!

MANGUEIRA É NAÇÃO E COMUNIDADE!
"MINHA FESTA", TEU SAMBA, NINGUÉM VAI CALAR!
SOU TEU FILHO FIEL, ESTAÇÃO PRIMEIRA,
POR TUA BANDEIRA VOU SEMPRE LUTAR!
"MINHA FESTA", TEU SAMBA, NINGUÉM VAI CALAR!
SOU TEU FILHO FIEL, ESTAÇÃO PRIMEIRA,
POR TUA BANDEIRA VOU SEMPRE LUTAR!
