GRES Estácio de Sá Samba-School
Estácio de Sá Samba-School is one of the most traditonal samba schools in Rio, and its origins remote to the first samba-school. Its Drums Section is considered one of the best in all Brazilian Carnival. Let´s learn a it more about this fascinating story:
Estácio de Sá Samba School, was officially founded February 27, 1955 under the name of Unidos de São Carlos, from the merger of 4 samba-schools in Morro de São Carlos, established at the neighborhood of Estácio. The schools were: Paraíso das Morenas, Recreio de São Carlos (old “Vê Se Pode Samba-school” and “Cada Ano Sai Melhor” (former Para o Ano Sai Melhor.)

Its founding members include Miro (first president), Caldez, Neca Handsome, Candide Canary, Sidney Conception of Zacharias Estacio, Jose Botelho, Mauricio Gomes da Silva, Walter Herrice, Manuel Bagulho, among others. Originally, the samba-school had blue and white as its main colors, later changing for red and white in 1965. The name of Estacio de Sa Samba-School was finally adopted only in 1983, and currently headquartered at Avenida Salvador de Sá.

Estácio de Sá Samba-School premiered within the so-called elite team of samba-schools in Rio in 1968, with the parade plot honoring the Imperial Museum. During the 70's and 80 the samba-school alternated brilliant parades in the main group with minor slippage.
Among sambas songs from Estacio considered of best quality are the 1975 carnival samba-song (The Feast of the Cirio de Nazare - 10th place on the Group 1) and 1976: “Arte Negra na legendária Bahia” - The Negro Art in Legendary Bahia, which achieved 8th place in Group 1.

In 1985, Estacio de Sa presented another interesting Carnival, with the parade plot-theme called “Prata da Noite” – “Silver Night”, which paid tribute to legendary Brazilian actor Grande Otelo. He paraded alongside the starlet Watusi at the last float, which reproduced the stage of the Scala Theater in Rio, where the two worked together at the time.

After a few very reasonable carnival presentations, like in 1990, with a parade-theme based on Langsdorff, and 1991 with “Brasil, brega e kitsch”, Estácio de Sá ´s time had arrived: In 1992, the samba-school whose traditions are amongst the most important in Brazil, won the disputed Rio de Janeiro Special Group Carnival title: “Pauliceia desvairada - 70 anos de Modernism”, which portrayed Brazil´s 70 years of its modernist movement. The Carnival Designers for that parade were Mário Monteiro and Chico Spinosa. Estácio had finally reached its epic moment at Brazil ´s Carnival.

Estácio de Sá has today approximately 4000 members at its parade and has one of the best Drum Sections of the entire Rio de Janeiro Samba-schools. The “tamborins” section is particularly strong and widely recognized as very innovative and vibrant. Let´s see how now the technical profile of the school now in 2010:

Rosas
