Viradouro ´s History

Viradouro Samba-School was founded on 24th, June 1946 by Nelson dos Santos, known as “Jangada”.   The G.R.E.S Unidos do Viradouro is one of the great cultural and artistic references from Niteroi, the city located at the other side of the Guanabara Bay in Rio.  During most of its history, the samba-school reveled at the Niteroi, but in 1986 Viradouro decided through voting that it should start competing at Rio ´s Carnival, and not Niteroi.   In 1987, Viradouro competed in the Rio Carnival´s Access Groups C, B, and A, being considered champion in 1990, with the theme-plot  “Só Vale o Que Está Escrito”, from Carnival Producer Max Lopes.   This Carnaval Title gave Viradouro the chance thereupon to finally participate at the elite group (called Special Group) at Rio´s Sambadrome.

The year the school achieved the Rio Carnival “Group A” title, coincided with the arrival at the school, of José Carlos Monassa, a prominent leader & President that lead the school for 16 years.  In 1991, on Viradouro’s had its début on the Special Group, and the samba-school made clear that they intended to establish themselves as a great school, competing in equality of conditions with its co-sisters.   Disputing the Carnval title with other 15 schools, Viradouro achieved seventh place, with the theme “Bravo, Bravíssimo – Dercy, o Retrato de um Povo”, by Max Lopes and Mauro Quintaes.

During the following years, the Samba-School from Niteroi continued to present memorable spectacles at Rio´s Sambadrome and all the hard work was rewarded:  In 1997 Viradouro finally  conquered its first Carnaval contest in Rio´s Special Group, with the now famed theme: “Trevas! Luz! A Explosão do Universo” -  “Darknenss! Light! Explosion of the Universe”  by legendary Carnival Producer Joãosinho Trinta.
